The Night Boat
This was painted for the Subterranean Press edition of Robert McCammon’s book about a WW II submarine that won’t stay dead. They crew, having been entombed all that time, are more that a touch irritable. I spent a long time researching the U-boat. Although the author is quite specific about the type it seemed to me there were endless variations even within a particular class. Also, I wasn’t sure what degree of rust and decay should be apparent as the submarine had been preserved buried in sand. In the end I liked the rusted and peeling look seen on some much used, but intact boats. It’s a case of visual interest winning out over technical accuracy, although I expect U-boat experts across the globe will be infuriated. There are also two interior colour pieces which I’ll post soon.
