Prince of the Godborn
This was commissioned by Unwins in the UK for the cover of the first book in the Seven Citadels Quartet by Geraldine Harris.
Sometimes it's difficult to translate an author's ideas into visual form. The notable thing about the main characters in this series was that they had extremely large eyes. I was simply unable to stop them looking cartoon-like, like an alien or, as in this case, a bit like a Thunderbirds puppet. Nobody seemed to mind, however, and I went on to paint the rest of the series.
This was also used on the Spanish edition of the book, a German paperback cover and a German magazine.
