Cover for a book by Mary Gentle published by PS Publishing. It takes place in the Visigothic Carthage of Ash: A Secret History, but stands alone and can be read without reference to the novel.
Mary Gentle's story is very involving and atmospheric but I found it difficult to imagine what ancient Carthage would have looked like and surprisingly hard to find any information. In the end I tried to give it a kind of North African feel and crossed my fingers. The Penitence of the title is the name given to the huge cloud that permanently shrouds the city.
